Rochester, NY … U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $1,099,854 in new federal funding for the Catholic Charities Diocese of Rochester. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Labor. These grants will be awarded to YouthBuild, a pre-apprenticeship program for at-risk youth from ages 16-to-24 that will be further developed in Rochester through Catholic Family Center.

Leadership from around NY State speak of their support of career development services for at-risk youth

“This federal funding will help the Catholic Family Center continue its great work by giving many young adults the opportunity to earn their GED, accrue real construction-related job experience and make a better life for themselves,” said Senator Schumer. “I am pleased that the Department of Labor has recognized the importance of the YouthBuild program and look forward to hearing about its many successes across the state.”

“Catholic Family Center will use these funds to continue to support YouthBuild degree completion and industry-recognized certification programs that will propel at-risk youth toward achieving their full potential,” said Senator Gillibrand. “I will continue to support more federal funding for pre-apprenticeship programs like YouthBuild in New York. Helping our young people obtain the necessary degrees and certifications will enable them to be competitive when applying for in-demand occupations.”

“We are so enthusiastic to have the opportunity to bring our workforce development services and partnerships with local businesses to YouthBuild in order to further expand the career opportunities for our city’s at-risk youth.” Marlene Bessette, CEO of Catholic Family Center (CFC) adds. “With this funding, CFC can match youth with the opportunity to have two years of active service, followed by a one year follow-up period during which we will provide reinforcing support services and track progress.”

Catholic Family Center will operate this project in conjunction with our Rochester Workforce Consortium partners the Office of Adult & Career Education Services (OACES) of the Rochester City School District and Career Start.
