Project Homeless Count – Point in Time (PIT) 2018

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

Rochester, NY … Let’s Make Everyone Count

Every year just after New Year’s the NY State Continuums of Care brings all of its members and other community partners together to try to count how many homeless are in Rochester both in shelter and not (in the streets). This street outreach effort, is known as the Point in Time count. A large band of volunteers will be sent out in groups and designated to a specific area of the city, where they will comb the streets, underpasses, alleyways, etc. in that area looking for homeless individuals and/or signs of homelessness (for example, tents, make-shift encampments, etc…) Each year our goal is to provide each person encountered during Project Homeless Count with a back pack of supplies, which have been donated by the community over the past several months.

About Point in Time

The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on a single night in January. HUD requires that Continuums of Care conduct an annual count of homeless persons who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing, and Safe Havens on a single night. Continuums of Care also must conduct a count of unsheltered homeless persons every other year (odd numbered years). Each count is planned, coordinated, and carried out locally.

What you can do

The project is still in great need of volunteers and leaders. Those interested in supporting this important event may contact Rebecca.miglioratti@dfa.state.ny.us. Local efforts will be coordinated at Trillium Health at 259 Monroe Ave.
