Homelessness

Homelessness Has Many Faces

Homelessness affects individuals from all cultural, religious, racial and economic backgrounds. Yes, homelessness can happen to anyone, for many reasons:

  • Lack of affordable housing
  • Family break up
  • Poor money management
  • Loss of job
  • Loss of benefits
  • Chemical dependencies
  • Untreated mental health or medical problems
  • Domestic violence
  • Institutional discharge
  • Eviction
  • Fire

Since 1995, the numbers of emergency and transitional beds have for the homeless have increased by 30% to meet the increasing need for shelter in our community. On any given night, over 500 persons are sheltered in our communities. This is 44% above the numbers placed in 1995.

In a survey done in our region, men account for about 57% of the homeless adults, and women account for about 43%.
