Chemical Dependence Prevention Services (CD Prevention) is licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) as a preventive counseling service to students and their families based in each school location.
Services include individual and family counseling to those students and their families qualifying for admission to the program. Group sessions are also provided to students deemed to be at risk for substance abuse. These groups can be problem specific and/or of a general preventive related topic, (coping strategies, anger management, social skills, grief and loss, self-esteem). Classroom presentations of an educational nature are also provided, which are aimed at a more general preventive effort.
Approximately 120 students at any given time (300 annually) are seen in five different schools. One counselor is assigned to each location with a part-time Program Manager, who oversees the program.
ELIGIBILITY: Students who are seen are deemed at risk based on OASAS qualifications. Identified risk factors are:
- Intrapersonal problems
- School problems
- Family dysfunction
- Drug and/or alcohol abuse
In summary, this is a school-based free counseling service for youths whose family environment, behavior and/or psychosocial development place them at higher risk for alcohol and substance abuse. Parents and/or siblings of these students may also be included in the program depending on their involvement in these at risk behaviors.
FEES: The cost of this program is shared by OASAS and the school districts served. There is no fee charged to the students and/or their families.
PROGRAM LOCATIONS: Counselors are placed primarily in various school districts throughout Monroe County. The following five schools currently provide prevention counseling:
- Edison High School
- Bishop Kearney
- Arcadia Middle/High School
- Kirk Road
- Holmes Road School
INTAKE PROCESS: The counselor in each school location is referred to students deemed at risk by the school staff, the families of the student or by self referral. Contact the Program Manager at (585) 262-7066 with any general information questions.
